Classic Street Fighter titles have a special place in everyone’s heart within the Street Fighter community, and the FGC in general. They are games that have aged well, and even still are supported within the competitive gaming community. In the past, we’ve seen ports and re-releases of some of these classic Street Fighter titles, but with the arrival of next-gen platforms, it seems Capcom’s main priority has been pushing out their new fighters onto the platforms, and holding off porting some of their old ones till later.
Earlier this year, Capcom announced the “Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection”, a game which contains a handful of some of the pasts most significant Street Fighter titles including the original Street Fighter, Street Fighter II Turbo, Alpha 3, Third Strike, and many more. The game arrives in just a few weeks, and to celebrate it’s arrival, Capcom has recently announced a special tournament series featuring some of the titles on the game, which will be featured throughout the span of a few feature FGC events.
The tournament series is the “SF30th Anniversary Tournament Series”, and will feature the title Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Street Fighter III: Third Strike. Each tournament for each game will be taking place at an upcoming FGC major this year. The first tournament of the series will take place at CEO in Daytona Beach, Florida from June 29th – July 1st, and will be titled the “Grandmaster Challenge,” featuring Super Street Fighter II Turbo. The second tournament will take place at SoCal Regionals 2018 in Ontario, California from September 14th -16th, entitled “Dramatic Battle,” featuring Street Fighter Alpha 3. The third, and final confirmed tournament will take place at Canada Cup 2018, in Toronto, Ontario entitled “Fight for the Future,” and will feature Street Fighter III: Third Strike.
Each event is set to feature a prize pool of $7,000 so if you’re an active competitor in any of these titles you may want to consider checking the event out!
