2016 saw the debut of the Super Smash Bros. franchise at DreamHack tournaments across the globe. Super Smash Bros. Melee, to be specific was the featured title, which ultimately was a great addition to the events line-up as DreamHack officially saw their debut of events within the NA region in 2016 with DreamHack Austin.
DreamHack is truly taking things to the next level this year, with 6 currently scheduled events to take place across the year, 4 events of which to feature both Super Smash Bros. Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Melee! Yes, the Smash community has found yet another tournament series adopter, and competitors could not be anymore excited.
Despite Super Smash Bros. Melee being present at last years DreamHack events, Super Smash Bros. Wii U was left out, which was quite unfortunate especially considering the massive growth the title has scene within the eSports community throughout the duration of 2016.
Both Smash titles are set to feature a prize pool of $10,000 at every DreamHack event this year, with 4 events taking place in North America, and two in Sweden. The 2017 events are as follows:
- DreamHack Austin (April 28th – April 30th)
- DreamHack Summer, Sweden (June 17th – June 19th)
- DreamHack Atlanta (July 21st – July 23rd)
- DreamHack Montreal (September 8th – September 10th)
- DreamHack Denver (October 20th – October 22nd)
- DreamHack Winter, Sweden (November 30th – December 2nd)
While both DreamHack events in Sweden will not feature Super Smash Bros. Wii U, it’s still great to see the title being picked up for the NA events, likely due to the North American region having a much larger Smash 4 scene than in Europe. The prize pool breakdown for both Super Smash Bros. Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Melee have also been revealed, which are as follows:
- 1st – $4,700
- 2nd – $2,000
- 3rd – $1,000
- 4th – $700
- 5-6th – $500
- 5-6th – $500
- 7-8th – $300
- 7-8th – $300
Signups for the first upcoming 2017 DreamHack event, DreamHack Austin, are currently open right now. You can register now by visiting here. Competitors will also need to hold a DreamHack Ticket, which can be purchased here.
It’s great to see DreamHack making such a big push for the NA Super Smash Bros scene in 2017. I can’t wait to hopefully attend at least a few of the NA events this year, as DreamHack Austin was definitely an experience I wouldn’t mind having again.
