Recently we reported the news regarding Nintendo and The Pokemon Company’s announcement of revealing that the upcoming Tekken style Pokemon fighting game, Pokken Tournament, will officially be apart of the 2016 Pokemon Championship Series, along with the video games and the trading card game.
With that information having been out to the public for awhile now, Nintendo has taken the next step and has announced several Qualifier events, taking place for Pokken Tournament, that are set to kick off next weekend at various GameStop stores around the U.S!
The qualifier events will begin on February 27th, winner of each event will advance to the finals which will be held at the Nintendo NY store on March 17th. The top two players from that Qualifier Finals event, will then travel to the 2016 Pokemon National Championships, which will be held in Columbus, Ohio from July 1st – 3rd. The winner of the National Championships will then walk away with a bundle of sweet prizes, as well as a free advance to the World Championship which is set to take place later this year in August in San Francisco, California.
Now here’s when and where the Pokken action takes place. Eight GameStop locations will be holding a Qualifier event here in the U.S. The events are all on a first-come, first-serve basis, with registration kicking off at 10am local time, and the event running from 11am – 5:30pm local time. Attendees will be split into two age brackets. One bracket for competitors born in 2001 or later, and one bracket for competitors born earlier than 2001.
Nintendo has also announced that after the event, they will provide a professional fighting game player to train the winner of each age bracket before they head to the finals in New York. The winners of the finals at the Nintendo NY Store will receive a Wii U, a copy of the Pokken Tournament game, as we as travel allowances to the 2016 Pokemon National Championships.
The company has stated “We cannot wait to add Pokkén Tournament to the Pokémon Championship Series,” said J.C. Smith, The Pokémon Company International’s Senior Director of Consumer Marketing. “It’ll be fun watching who’ll quickly master the game, moving on to the Pokémon US National Championships, and ultimately battling Pokkén Tournament players from around the globe at the 2016 Pokémon World Championships.”
