It’s only January, and the competitive action is already preparing to kick off in full force! After an overly successful launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch back in December; Smash fans have been craving more competitive action and very soon they will be receiving exactly that!

Announced by Nintendo themselves earlier today, the company is readying up two brand new North American Open tournaments for both Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as well as Splatoon 2. Each of these tournaments are set to have their own set of online qualifier events, where the winners of each will win a trip to compete in the Finals Event which will take place during PAX East 2019 this March, in Boston, MA.

The online qualifier events for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be split into 3 different events, each containing a qualifier tournament and an online finals; winners of the online finals will then advance to the final event taking place at PAX East 2019.

As for Splatoon 2, being a team game, the tournament will first hold an “INK Pool Online Qualifier” event, which is set to take place on February 10th. The top eight teams from the pools online qualifier will then compete in the online Qualifier finals which will take place on March 2nd. The top four teams from the Qualifier Finals will then advance to the final event which will take place at PAX East 2019.

This is all a very exciting opportunity for competitors from both the Splatoon 2 and Super Smash Bros community. While the overall format for the games may be a bit different than what we are traditionally used to from most community events; it’s still very exciting to see Nintendo actively hosting their own large-scale competitions for these games, and overall providing players with opportunities to compete. All tournaments will be ran on Battlefy, so be sure to head over there now and register if you are interested in competing!
